A note on flame rating
A UL 94 rating belongs to a resin at a tested thickness and colour, not to a product. The same compound can reach V-0 at 1.5 mm and only V-2 at 0.8 mm, and a colourant change can invalidate a rating. Clear PC generally needs ≥3 mm for V-0, while opal and milky PC can reach V-0 from around 1.5 mm. If your luminaire approval needs a specific rating, tell us the rating and the wall thickness at enquiry stage and we will quote the flame-retardant grade that carries it, with the resin maker's UL documentation for that grade and wall. Extruded Profile or Cut-to-Size Plate - Which to Specify
Buyers searching "PC diffuser plate" and "PC diffuser sheet" are after two different things. A plate or sheet is cut from stock and dropped into an existing frame. An extruded profile is drawn through a die matched to your fixture, so the diffuser, the light-blocking edge and the snap-fit can be one part. We extrude profiles for linear lights, cabinet lights, office luminaires and step lights - sections from a few mm to 500 mm wide.

PS is the cheapest of the three and a legitimate choice for flat indoor panel diffusers at low fixture temperatures - we extrude PS profiles as well. It is the wrong choice for anything that clips, flexes, sits close to a driver, or faces a fire-rating requirement. Four failure modes we see on returned diffuser profiles
- No expansion allowance on runs over 2 m. PC expands roughly 65 µm per metre per °C. A 3 m run seeing a 40 °C rise from ambient to steady-state fixture temperature grows about 8 mm. Clamped at both ends, it bows out of the channel within days of first switch-on. Leave about 3 mm per metre at one end, or specify a section with a sliding end joint.
- Snap-fit dimensioned to nominal instead of to tolerance. A clip drawn to the nominal wall with no allowance fits the first sample and then rattles or splits across a production batch. We quote clip geometry against the ±0.3 mm profile tolerance - cheaper to argue about 0.1 mm at drawing stage than to recut a die.
- Alkaline or solvent cleaning after installation. PC held under bending stress in a clip crazes on contact with ammonia-based or alkaline cleaners - fine cracks along the clip line appearing after weeks, not immediately. Specify neutral-pH cleaning in your installation sheet.
- A non-LED source behind a standard diffusion grade. Standard diffusion PC assumes an LED source emitting no UV. Behind fluorescent or metal-halide sources it yellows measurably within the first couple of years. Those builds need UV protection specified at the die, not added later.

7.2 Tooling: what actually decides whether a custom section is worth it
Our die shop is in-house and every extrusion die is designed and cut by our own engineers, from a drawing in any format. Three things are worth knowing before you compare quotes:
- Tooling is a one-time charge, not a per-order charge. It is amortised across your first order and disappears from every order after that, which is why the die cost - not the per-metre price - is what decides whether a custom section makes sense at your annual volume.
- The die may already exist. We hold a large library of lighting sections from 20+ years of extruding for this industry. Send a drawing or a 100 mm piece of your current part and we will tell you whether an existing die fits before quoting any tooling at all.
- The die stays available for your repeat orders. Ask about exclusivity if the section is proprietary to your fixture.
7.3 Price basis
Extruded diffuser profiles are quoted per metre, derived from section width × wall thickness × resin density - which is why we publish weight in kg/m for every profile and why a drawing gets you a real price instead of a catalogue range. Two consequences: shaving 0.2 mm off the wall of a wide profile moves material cost noticeably, and moving from 85 % to 92 % transmission changes the resin, not a machine setting.
