One supplier may include die trials and dimensional corrections in its tooling charge; another may price every revision separately. One may quote virgin, UV-stabilized rigid PVC; another may assume a general-purpose compound with an undefined regrind allowance. The price per meter can look comparable while the actual offers are not.

This is where a general rule often fails. A manufacturer that performs well on rigid single-material channels may not be the right source for a soft-rigid seal, even if both projects are described as "PVC extrusion." As an internal decision rule, a supplier scoring 80 or more can proceed if no disqualifying risk remains. A score of 65–79 calls for evidence or corrective actions before tooling approval. Below 65, the buyer should normally stop the project. These thresholds are a suggested procurement control, not an industry standard; safety-critical or regulated programs may require stricter gates.
Apply one evidence rule across all candidate manufacturers: award full points only for current, part-relevant records; award half points for a documented system or comparable-part record that still needs project confirmation; award zero when the answer is verbal, generic, expired, or cannot be traced to the proposed material, site, line, or process. Gate 2: Make DFM and Tooling Terms Part of the Technical Offer

Balanced walls, practical radii, controlled transitions, support for hollow sections, cooling access, and a clear distinction between critical and reference dimensions all affect the likelihood of achieving a stable profile.
This is not a request for the supplier to redesign the product without permission. It is a test of whether the supplier can predict where the profile may bow, twist, sink, drag, distort, or become difficult to measure. A useful DFM response marks these locations on the drawing and proposes a controlled alternative. A weak response simply states that the drawing is manufacturable and moves directly to a tooling invoice.
Tooling ownership then needs its own written section. Payment does not automatically define who owns the die, calibrators, gauges, or supporting fixtures. A tolerance promise without a measurement method is not a production control. Hollow pockets and uneven walls also cool differently from open, balanced sections.

One approved sample should open the next gate, not trigger an unrestricted production order. A sample proves that conforming pieces can be selected; it does not show the scrap needed to obtain them, the shift-to-shift drift, or whether packing preserves straightness in transit. Three variables only become visible after a sustained run and shipping trial: scrap burden, shift-to-shift drift, and post-transit straightness. Red Flags That Should Override the Score
A candidate should not advance when a critical claim cannot be connected to the actual part. The most important disqualifiers are an undefined compound, refusal to disclose the regrind policy, a certificate that cannot be verified, product claims based on a different grade or color, no written tooling ownership terms, no change-notification process, and unwillingness to run a controlled first-article or pilot stage.
Other warning signs require investigation rather than immediate rejection: every dimension is promised at the same tight tolerance; capacity is described only by machine count; the quote excludes inspection details; the sample is hand-selected without boundary samples; or the salesperson cannot identify the engineer responsible for tool and process decisions.
The final selection should therefore be simple to defend: require every non-negotiable gate to pass, score the remaining evidence consistently, and close open risks before production release. A slightly lower score with transparent limitations is often safer than a perfect presentation built on assumptions.
